Ben and Tom Birchall stormed to a convincing victory in the second round of the British Sidecar Cup at Oulton Park on Monday also setting a new lap record for the class of 1m 44.788s - 92.48mph.

Fresh from their victory in the first round of the World Sidecar championship at Le Mans, the team headed to Cheshire to contest the second round of the British championship. Because of a date clash they were unable to ride in the first round at Brands Hatch but were keen to make up for that by securing a win at Oulton Park.

Round Two Oulton Park

Conditions for qualifying were cold and damp, but the Reeves Brothers banged in five quick laps on the Carl Cox Motorsport Kawasaki and then sat back. Chris Walker/Ashley Hawes and the Kershaw/Clark pairing ran at the front until the closing stages, when the reigning champions Stevens/Charlwood put the JG Speedfit Kawasaki into second. Amazingly, in fourth place were the Birchall Brothers with a very rapid 600cc Yamaha LCR just one second off the pole position time.

The Race

Late in the day, in gloriously sunny conditions the pack charged into Old Hall Corner with the pole men just edging it ahead of Stevens/Charlwood and a tooth and nail scrap between Walker/Hawes and Kershaw/Clark. The Birchall Brothers were less fortunate and did not make the most of their third row start on their Mitchells of Mansfield Yamaha. They were down in around eight place at the end of lap one with it all to do.

These picturesque surroundings have played host to the greatest sidecar racers in the world over many decades, and the May Bank Holiday Weekend promises to uphold that tradition.

Five times World Champion Tim Reeves, now back with younger brother Tristan, heads the charge as prime challenger for the 2017 crown, and leads the title chase after the opener at Brands Hatch where they landed an emphatic double. British Champions together in 2012, they want it back on their Carl Cox Motorsport Kawasaki.

The weather gods smiled on Knockhill race circuit at the weekend as unexpected sunshine shone down on the inaugural round of the Marin Scottish Sidecar Cup.

Sterling efforts by Gavin Browne, the new chairman of the SSRC, together with the support of his committee and sponsorship from patron Boris Stroud resulted in a bumper entry of 18 outfits - the best turnout of sidecars at Knockhill for over 10 years. Not even a chilly North wind could cool the enthusiasm of teams who came from as far afield as Bedlington and Belfast to enjoy some great racing and Scottish Sidecar Club hospitality.

Team Birchall set the benchmark for the pace when they took a decisive win in the opening round of the FIM World Sidecar championship at Le Mans on Saturday.

The new rules for the world championship meant that all Sidecar teams had to change from 1000cc to 600cc engines.

Having switched to the smaller engine last year Ben and Tom Birchall secured the FIM F2 World Sidecar title, securing pole positions and lap records on their way to the title.
