2021 saw a step towards a return to normality following a truncated 2020 season, which had been one of cancellations and restrictions in the world of motor racing. Lee Crawford and Scott Hardie had a dominant year campaigning their LCR Suzuki F2, which ran faultlessly throughout, and also made their F600 debut on a recently acquired LCR Kawasaki with hugely encouraging results.

There was a memorable return for the first British F2 Sidecar Championship races to be held in Scotland for almost two decades. Knockhill served up some first-class racing, with new lap records achieved in both the Super F2 and Cup classes as the final placings were decided at the end of a fascinating season – which whilst disrupted by the “Covid-19” pandemic – was a credible six round series, featuring thirteen points scoring races.

There was a hat-trick of wins for both the F2 and F1 F.S.R.A. / Wintec Racing Pre-Injection Championship leaders at Croft over the weekend of the 21st and 22nd August. Rob Fisher / Sarah Stokoe (600 Baker Yamaha) won all three F2 races with ease, and were the first Pre-Injection outfit home each time overall. Simon Horton / Jordan Forrest (1200 Wintec Suzuki) took the three F1 race wins, bouncing back from their disappointing Sunday last time out at Cadwell Park.

Another faultless display saw Lee Crawford / Scott Hardie (LCR Suzuki) take pole position, a double race win and a lap record, on a weekend which finally landed them the A.C.U. / F.S.R.A. British F2 Championship – a prize the team has been chasing for seven seasons. While Harry Payne / Mark Wilkes (GP Yamaha) had a slightly more problematic weekend, second place in the opening race and other results going in their favour saw them accrue enough points to secure the F2 Cup in their debut year in the series.

The Cadwell Park International Sidecar Revival meeting lived up to all expectations with close and exciting racing throughout the weekend – particularly in the trio of A.C.U. / F.S.R.A. British F2 Sidecar Championship races. Lap records tumbled in both the Super and F2 Cup categories; with two wins going to reigning champions Pete Founds / Jevan Walmsley (LCR Honda), and the other – a superb first outright victory for Harry Payne / Mark Wilkes (GP Yamaha) – who eased to a hat-trick of wins in the F2 Cup.

At that meeting, Pete Founds / Jevan Walmsley proved invincible, taking pole position and a hat-trick of wins, breaking the lap record on each occasion, on their way to an unprecidented fourth consecutive British Championship.

Two months on from the last event of the A.C.U. / F.S.R.A. British F2 Sidecar Championship, Mallory Park played host to the third round of this year’s series. Initially, this was expected to be round five, but with Covid restrictions seeing the postponement of the Knockhill round until September, and with Anglesey cancelled altogether last month, this has seen the calendar reduced to seven meetings in total.

Mallory Park To Host Round Three Of The 2021 F.S.R.A. / Wintec Pre-Injection Sidecar Championship

Words – Dave Tibbles / Photographs – Ste McNorton

Following a five week break due to the cancellation of the Anglesey round owing to Covid restrictions, E.M.R.A. welcome back the F.S.R.A. Pre-Injection Sidecar Championship for their third round at Mallory Park. The previous visit was on a very wet Bank Holiday Monday in May, but hopefully the weather will be kinder this weekend.
A big thank you goes to E.M.R.A. who have in these difficult times helped all entrants with reduced entry fees for this event. The Pre-Injection teams will form a joint grid with the club sidecar, with a capacity entry of twenty four teams. Also on the programme are the A.C.U. / F.S.R.A. British F2 Sidecars, with this being an event which will appeal to all fans of sidecar racing. Advanced tickets can be purchased from the Mallory Park website.
The Pre-Injection sidecar championship allows for a platform for teams to enjoy competitive racing with more affordable, less high-tech machinery, and is an ideal “starter class”. The series is made up of teams with different budgets, abilities and experience – from novices in their orange jackets to old hands with many years of racing behind them. This mixed with various types of engines and chassis all adds to the interest as at these present times sidecar racing at club level is largely on the decline. The Pre-Injection championship is an ideal opportunity to try out sidecar racing whether as a driver or passenger. Our supporters are Wintec Sidecar Racing Services; PAGID Brake Pads and the Formula Sidecar Racing Association (F.S.R.A.). Anyone interested in being a part of this championship or thinking of having a go at sidecar racing please contact Dave Tibbles (sidecar number 181).
