Dave Saville TT machines 1979-1990.

Unread post by adam10185 »

Hi all, firstly thank you for all your help regarding my sidecar chassis/engine TT project. I am so close to having this complete now.
The remaining sticking point seems to be with the late great Dave Saville.

Most of the time he is listed as using a "Sabre" machine which I only recently discovered was the entrant name and not the chassis itself.
If anyone could help with these it would be appreciated. Apologies for starting yet another thread on this but I felt the remaining information was getting lost in the previous one.

The information I have suggests he was using a mixture of Shelbourne and Windle chassis but just need some clarification on this. Hopefully someone will know. Cheers.

Denis keen / Rob Parker ..Dennis built his own chassis based on an Ireson,so I presume it would've been called a Keen chassis.

The 1984 Dave Saville outfit, was an Ireson chassis built originally for a Konig engine, but fitted instead with a Yamaha 350.

Yeah the Ireson was for the Konig that my dad rode, Dave took this out and fitted a 350.

Our first TT chassis was a Winstanley, converted to 350 TZ from a Kettle.
The second outfit was Colin Hoppers first production chassis. There was talk at the time of a minimum weight for F2s. The Hopper was pushing too light and we were prepared to use ballast if necessary. Silly mistake of mine stopped us at Ramsey - put the no-return tank breather in back to front.
Happy Days!

Hi Brian, thanks for your reply, it is very much appreciated. Another piece of the puzzle solved.

Does anyone happen to know if John Hartell is still around to ask about his 1987 F2 machine?
He is listed in the results as being on a CWH Armstrong.
As listed above there is some confusion between a Shelbourne or Hopper chassis.

Also have another a quick question regarding Greg Lambert's 2003 entry, he is listed as being on a "Molyneux" chassis where as other riders (Moly, Geoff Bell, Tony Thirkell) were all using DMR chassis.

Am I correct in assuming a Molyneux and a DMR were the same thing?

DMR is dave Molyneux Racing so yes same thing.

As for John Hartell if someone puts you in touch with Conrad Harrison he knocks about with him.

Yes and no.....

Moly didn't start calling his chassis DMR until quite sometime after he started making them in 1992/3.
I don't recall what year Dave actually started calling them DMR himself, but it may well have been after 2003, or Greg was using an older chassis. This might explain Greg entering his as a Molyneux and not a DMR.
Prior to DMR they were entered as Molyneux, Moly or Dave Molyneux chassis, named by the individual owners on an ad hoc basis.
I ran his first chassis for 4 years and always entered it as a Molyneux.
Older - but none the wiser
