The most sensible post on this was the one from Dick Hawes - well said!
I loved push starts and the number out of the bag, it`s the way it was done...funny thing, though - in the Classic club, the quick guys who`s faces` fitted, always went to the front row anyway, whatever number they pulled out!

That ALWAYS happened in the `good old days`. when my brother was in a race and I was`nt I used to go into the collecting area and watch the ``ballot`` some were offered one side of the tin and others were offered the other, funny how the favorites mostly got onto the front. It did`nt worry us madmen from the hills much, because we always made good starts and usually either went down the outside of the grid 80 percent on the grass or down the inside next to the armco before most of the others even fired up, usually we were 1/2 into the first corner, and the big brother made a good lead and mostly won. So it made no difference to us.

Grid position from Bag?? I Can remember a certain TWO Stroke was always at the front of the grid, and reverted to Push starts because it started better than the Weslakes. No names given.

Occasionally heard a starter motor from a 'Shed' on the grid at Lydden when Push starts were the order of the day. What that particular driver forgot was to at least wait for the sound of runniing feet to mask the 'clonk' of the motor working

Talking of starter motors I remember a few years back in the push start days when I was a marshal I had to perform a pit lane start for a crew on a BMW. Imagine my surprise when in the first race I signalled for him to go and he hit the button, outfit fired up and off they went! He had a shock in race 2 because I stood in his way until all the crews had left the grid and were well on their way to Riches ;)

Well, actually it was so long ago I can't remember who started it!!
