The 2nd and last sidecar race was in 1992, The late Peter Broom was the winner(the only 600 !!!!)

Les Kirby was passengered by Trevor Dixon. Both worked at St. Michaels Motors in Stamford Lincs

aberdare is still going tho no sidecars racing but there will be some sidecar parade laps during this year's event, 28/29th july

Sorry Bruce - you're wrong there - we had our last race there before we packed up in '96 - it was a 2 day meeting - we missed the Saturday - we arrived Sunday morning to be told George Hardwick had gone home 'cos it was too bumpy - can't remember too much about the others there - Paul Iwanski was there - Chas Greatrex might have been...
We did find the bumpy bits too - Julie injured her shoulder when we did....I put out a call for a passenger - a solo racer volunteered - he figured how hard can it be if a girl can do it ... - all I will say is that his visor was totally steamed up when we came in...

It's possible to get a road closure order but currently it's quite a protracted process. As I understand it, the first thing is to gain the support of the local council. It then has to get ratified by the county council whereupon it goes to consideration by parliament. I know the Motor Sport Association were lobbying government to try and get this process made easier.

There is an intention in my home town of Cheltenham to hold a race for electric vehicles around a track in the town centre. I believe this is supposed to happen within the next couple of years with a parade scheduled for this September.

I guess the first thing is to persuade the local chamber of commerce that it's a good thing for local business and it all grows from there. Details of the proposed track are here:

thats cool Gordon,i was led to believe that after 1992 it was quads,was yours a 350 only race.

lived in New Brighton in the early 80s, cracking racing along the prom. Some talk of a road race on the isle of Wight but not holding my breath.

Ah............Aberdare Park, what a blast that was!! I remember brushing Dennis's passenger as he fell out in front of us on the start / finish straight. How I missed him completely, I'll never know!
I did both of the Aberdare meetings and thoroughly enjoyed them. The crowd was amazing!

BTW - missing passengers?
Tim Jarvis was in with me.
Kevin Ellard was in with Steve Wood.

New Brighton was also a really good meeting. Full of atmosphere and quite an interesting circuit, I thought.
There don't seem to be many quirky meetings around these days, do there?

Hi Bruce - can't honestly remember if there were any 600s there - or whether it was a round of the 350 championship - probably was the F350 championship - Paul won it a few times in the early years...
OK - must have been 350 championship - Julie just had a look at the 350 championship winners on the cup - and Paul Iwanski was the 1st winner of that in '96...
And yes - there were quads there - absolutely barmy....

The reason Birmingham got canned was all down to the weather and the expected tv coverage,which
was paying for the event,
It rained all weekend of the last one and far to much carnage during one of the support races(they were fiestas i believe) caused the main race to be delayed past the allocated tv slot,and then cancelled,
All the mods to the roads and roundabouts that were done to allow the race are still in place so there is no physical reason why it could not be reinstated.

A great idea that never got off the ground really......SHAME

Just Been reading about halfords Birmingham GP. The track ran anticlockwise !!

New Brighton was an odd one, the road layout was a proposed estate that never happened, so the road was never adopted by the local council, ie not maintained by public expence. So a road closer order was not required, Birmingham had grand ideas of running an F1 race, hence they thought it was worth the effort of getting an act of Parliment. Due to amount of money lost, its used as an example of why its not worth doing.
