christinebrindley wrote:Hi all, Fred Brindley, was in fact Derek too, as is his youngest son. He was, as you say, the first mayor of Bawtry. The photograph is of Barry at the TT. Derek Jnr now operates out of the original Sabre Engineering site as Arrow engineering. The factory at Ranskill was sold and houses built on it. The other driver who had his car repair place opposite at Ranskill is Martin Witherington, his place has also now been built on. There were indeed many sidecar stars in the Retford Club family.
Christine, Martin Whittington surely? How are you and the kids by the way?

Hi I can tell you a little of the history of Derek Brindley, In 1961 he had a motorcycle shop on church street Bawtry (now axholme interiors )It had a small workshop at the back where he used to repair motorbikes ,and work on his TT machine (1000cc Vincent ) ,that he partnered with Johnny Wath, in 1962 whilst riding in the TT they hit an 18 inch curb at over 120 mph Derek broke his jaw in five places and cracked his pelvis,Johnny got away with cuts and bruises, but refused to ride again which was a shame as the year before they had won a God for ninth place,I was fifteen at the time and part time teaboy ,

I agree 100%, Fred. It needs doing now, while there are still folk around who were personally involved. This way you get first hand information and all the good background stories. Another 20/30 years and all the details become mingled with 'myth and legend' -and so much harder to research. Don't leave it to the journalists - they cannot get anything right, haha!
Bob.

Fred Brindley....what a character. I remember in 1967 coming out of Governors Bridge in practice whilst passengering for Roy Pike.
Fred and Dave Saville his passenger were both rolling about on the pavement. They were not hurt at all...just laughing their heads off.
When he scrutineered one year...everyone ended up with a 'VOTE LIBERAL' sticker under the sidecar.
FRED...ONE OF A KIND... AND THE FATHER OF TWO OF THE VERY BEST SIDECAR DRIVERS WE HAVE KNOWN.

THANKS FOR THE LAUGHS FRED

I was led to believe that SABRE was an acronym for Saville And Brindley Racing Equipe. Derek Snr often came to our pub in Misterton and we knew Dave from when my dad worked at Gringley Borstal. Dave's dad Doug also worked there.
