Worlds race one report from Mark Walters
Oschersleben,
Race one.
It was dry and bright for the start of the 12 lap sprint race in Oschersleben.
The red flags came out for an incident involving two teams not long into the race. The teams involved were John Holden and Ferry Segers, and Max Zimmermann and Ronja Mahl. Zimmermann was okay but the other three were airlifted to hospital for checks and observation.
It was to be a restart and a full race, 12 laps, but the light was fading.
Stephen Kershaw and Ryan Charlwood took the lead and led from flag to flag. The team were delighted with the race win, it is the first win for the team this year.
Todd Ellis and Emmanuelle Clement took second place; they did not have an answer to the pace that Kershaw and Charlwood set throughout the race.
Third place went to Sam and Tom Christie, they had to work for this place though, but it was well-deserved. They will be hoping for the same tomorrow or better.
Harry Payne and Kevin Rousseau took fourth place, like the Christie brothers they had to work for this place, but they were happy with the result.
Ben and Tom Birchall took fifth. They were fighting at the front for a podium spot, but as the race continued they were to fall back.
Tim Reeves and Mark Wilkes took sixth, they were reasonably happy with this. But tomorrow might be a struggle for Reeves with his leg injury.
Tomorrow there will be a 21 lap race starting at 14.05 local time.
