Anybody know what tyres I can put on a 12 inch wheel for my Windle Imp that will pass CRMC scrutineering.

I currently have 4.50 L12 Dunlops but I am told they are not very good.

Any comments?

BUT how do you find them Simon?
When we get our outfit it was fitted with Yokohama A008R which the previous owners said were great. The truth is they were crap and the A032R that we were told about from chatting with a couple of crews at a CRMC meeting were so much better it was almost unbelievable.

Well there's the problem. We have never raced a sidecar before so we can't tell what's good or bad yet. We have only done one afternoon session at Mallory. CRMC members that we met at the Mallory practise said we would be better off fitting the Yokohama's you have mentioned.

I am happy to run with a new set of Dunlop's whilst we are learning and I am sure the tyres are better than us at the moment. Dunlop have said they will only make these car tyres in medium compound from now on so I am not expecting them to be a good option in the long term.

I just thought it may be worth putting the feelers out so we know what to look for should a bargain come up.

Nothing wrong with the Yoko Ono`s and they are an awfull lot cheaper than Dunlops, especially if you look in the Mini magazines I paid £42 each for my 10" Yoko`s at that price I dont have to make them last a full 5 years I can throw them away after only 4.

Hi Matt,

Yes I have tried Ken and just about every other tyre dealer in the uk.

Everybody is sold out and Dunlop are not doing another run until the end of April.

I will just put the old tyres back on. They are very old but I really want to get out at Angelsey. Better to go out on those than don't go out at all.

I have emailed pictures of the wheels to Terry Windle to see if we can easily change to 13" wheels.

Ok I have got nowhere so I have sent my wheels to Terry W who is going to make me some 10" wheels.

Engine will not be ready for Angelsey so will just be on my solo. :(

A proper wheel size :D Go for the Yokohama AO32 's Simon. We get ours from Demon tweaks. Cost £98 for 2 delivered next day including v.a.t.

Attention all!!!!

If you wish to order Yoko's then go direct to George Polley motorsport, these guys are the main Yoko importer and you'll get them damn cheap. :D

Seeing as I'm not racing for a while I don't mind sharing a few trade secrets this year!!!

As per Triple's comments glad to see Simon is going for a proper size wheel!!! Anyway who wants loads of grip?? These bikes are far too much fun when they get out of shape 8)

Hi Peter,

Thanks for the info. The contact patch of the tyre cannot be more than 5.5 inches.

Also the speed rating is low. Can you find any racing tyres in that size?

Cheers,

Simon

Simon,

The tyres being mentioned are yoko OA48R - 165-55-12.

Now contact patch should not be an issue because the 10" yokos are 165-70-10. They look slightly wider, but in reality they're not. Richard Holmes the eligibilty man lives just round the corner to me so'll double check for you tonight.
They are quite a good tyre, and offer some advantages with the smaller wall height.

Does your bike have 12" wheels alround? The only reason I ask, is it seems unusual to have 12's on all three wheels. I've seen many variations of 12" wheel but never on all 3 wheels together.

The yoko's will naturally lower the ride height of your bike so check your clearances first. You can pick these tyres up from any decent Mini tuning shop i.e. Mini Spares, Minispeed etc and from memory they're around £40 a piece. So you'll get a set for not much more than the price of 1 dunlop!!!!

Jan.

One thing I have found with Yokohama tyres is how different the various tread typs are. When we first got our outfit we had the A008's fitted and changed for new of the same. Following various 'grip' (or lack off!) issues and a chat with various crews we were recommended to try the A032's. What a difference! Guess what I am trying to say is get some feedback from people using them to see how they go.

I guess I need to know if the 48's are any good.

I spoke to Richard last week who confirmed the 165/10 were ok so I guess the 165/12 will be ok as well.

I need to make a decision now as Terry is going to start making the new wheels in two days time!
