Link to an article I came across - it's a long read - but interesting (if you are interested in that kind of stuff)

OK - it says dirt bikes - but that's a bit misleading.

So what's wrong? Somebody is going to say that fuel consumption and exhaust emissions are too high. But wait! Is anybody screaming about the fuel consumption of Formula-One cars? Does anybody care about NOx emissions in NASCAR? Why is the racing two-stroke going away? A lot of people blame the government. But the 'EPA ban' on two-strokes is a myth. The EPA has said over and over that their regulations can be met by four-stroke and fuel-injected two-stroke engines.
Above quotation from the article .........
Emissions rulings are what killed two-stroke use in the first place, the points about F1 cars and NASCAR are very valid .........

So emissions killed the smokers. Blame the oil companies for that perhaps

Why

Well, it was not too well publicised but in the mid 60s one well known Japanese manufacturer succeeded in not only designing and building a stroker that needed no lubrication but ran successfully under extensive race condition testing. Yes, an engine with a revolutionary new bearing material that did not require lubrication
So what happened to this great idea

Heard of the everlasting light bulb

So have a guess ...
Strokers may return one day to again challenge four strokes - remember the 70s and 80s? If the emission challenges can be met then away they go. Or of any manufacturer cares to prise the secret from an oil company ...
Me? Long live the four strokes coz I hate strokers, all sound the same apart from anything else

Thanks Eddy

Don't do political too often these days, publicly that is but have some very strong opinions on certain matters that could be a tad controversial
Give me the sound of a Be-em being driven hard or even better several of 'em

Friends,
A great place to look for existing cutting edge 2-stroke technology is in the newest generation of Ski-Doo snowmobiles with the Rotax engines. They use an Evanrude direct high pressuse fuel injection gig. As in, the fuel injector(s) are next to the spark plugs, and spray After the piston has Closed the exhaust port. I rode with a few of these machines this past winter and I'm simply amazed. Very little smoke, only when stone cold, then smokeless and near odorless when warmed up. Fuel milelege is near double that of a comparable carb model, and oil use has been cut nearly in half. The sound is a bit odd. At idle, they fire Every stroke ! Sounds alot like a 4-stroke:( Also, Performance is staggering, how about 155hp from a 100% stock, single piped 800cc twin that meets every emission standard on earth, And has a full warranty.
Cheers,
Dave.

Yea yea yea- lol. You do know what I mean, at idle , a "normal" 2-stroke actually fires maybe every couple of strokes, totally at random. These direct EFI gigs, to be precise, sound like large bore 4-stroke in-line 4's at idle. Once you wind em' up though, they Do sound as they should
Cheers,
Dave
