HM Guvmint this morning announced a proposal to move the May Day BH to either October or St Georges Day in April citing May as a "congested month for public holidays".

If anything it should be moved to July/Early August, mid season and more chance of good weather

No, and I can't see it happening, surely ? People will have already booked holidays, trips away etc; not to mention sporting events, fetes etc. (There's a couple of race meetings on that day for example - CRMC at Donington and Derby Phoenix / FSRA FII at Cadwell).

Stated intention is that the May Day BH remain this year and will be moved in 2012.
This is obviously a very important plank in the guvmint's long term planning as there are seemingly other matters of lesser priority that need attention

They said on the news this morning it wouldn't happen until 2013 at the earliest so shouldn't affect anyone...unless you are super organised and book your hols over 2 years in advance.. I'd like to see it move personally for the my kids sake so they get a day off school in a month when they are not already off. People are always saying we should get a BH on St Georges Day so here's your chance! lol!

If it wasn't in May it wouldn't be the Mayday BH.....
How about moving it to July and calling it - um - Independance Day, perhaps?

I assumed that it was just for this year (haven't seen the news, don't usually bother with it as it tends to either revolve around second rate "celebrities" or overpaid duffers hoofing pigs bladders around a field). It's only more congested than normally this year as Easter is later than usual and they've shoehorned some sort of wedding in there as well !

Although I would agree a bank holiday mid July (round about the Monday of Southern 100 week) would be better than May

I think they want to get rid of May Day so we won't know when to start the revolution.....

Perhaps the Tories are trying to increase their votes in Scotland and Wales, by celebrating the English National Day as a holiday

......
Abolishing May Day seems the usual spiteful tactic

(like destroying the mines after you've closed them, so they can never be opened again)... why not change Victoria Day..oh, that's Royalist, not plebeian, of course.
Why am I bothering... we have Tynwald Day...

Thanks for the links, David - and I thought English Independence day was the day Ethelred became king!
But seriously, the British fought in the American Independence battles so maybe we deserve a day off.
And yes, the builder bit may be a slight exageration......
The age too; inside my head I'm 14 ( according to my wife "going on 12" )
But I find that grandfathers ( and grandmothers ) don't need anyone to wind them up - they're normally quite capable of winding
themselves up.
Yes, govmints DO tend to meddle with things that have been ok for years and leave all the things that need mending in a heap for the next govmint to sort out...

Sorry to go off topic..........
St George's Day? Looks like a great idea - except that in many years it's VERY close to Easter ( check out 2011 for instance ). That would mean that April was congested, so how about moving Easter to, say, Trafalgar Day as well?
