1991 sidewheel upright disassembly

How do these come apart, looks like it just presses apart once the brake disc is off

Press the shaft through everything which will mean the hub comes off exposing the bearings. These will probably be held in with circlips. When you come to putting the hub back on, it will need warming up to fit as it is an interference fit

Came apart easily, only one bearing has circlips either side and although it has a what looks like a crush tube between the bearings it is only long enough to fill about half the gap between them, is that normal?

That arrangement sounds right, although the spacer isn't. The spacer should be exactly the same length as the distance between the outer races so that when it all gets nipped together there is no Pre-load on the bearings. If the spacer isn't right you will have problems with the bearings
