Deeper sump Peter ? John McGaskill had his BM motor tilted back like that.

Geoff I think Peter is asking why the engine is not fitted straight in the chassis, and is fitted slightly sideways. With the shaft drive this is the only way to get any offset on the rear wheel, without offset they are rather poor on lefthanders.
I think it was Dieter Busch who came up with this solution to the problem on BMWs with left hand sidecars, you can have offset on the rear wheel on a right hand BMW sidecar without having to cant the engine.

I'd agree with Howard about the drive & the canter on the engine to get the crank pretty much central.

We do not need to fit the engine on an angle on the 16" bikes although Mike Richards builds his like this. It's mainly on the 12" and 13" wheeled bikes due too tyre width and the driveshaft being on the right. Dieter only did this on the fat wheeled bikes and Mike does this fitting the engine at a much greater angle than Dieter.
