I have heard that sidecars experience problems when fitting an R1 crossplane engine, going in to limp mode or limited power? Is this related to the IMU?

One area in general I've seen is what is called the "tip-over" switch. G forces on sidecar are different than bike, switch can "think" bike fell down.

Thanks for the reply. On a GSXR, the tipover switch is bypassed using two 150ohm resistors.

Just wondering why no one uses the big bang engine. What issues did Tim Reeves have using one?

Any engine that has TOS, you can look up test specs in manual. It's just a variable resistor in most. Just replace with two fixed resistor that make correct voltage.
I remember one of our guys running a new Blackbird, and have entire system shutdown in highspeed right hand turn, scary.
