Road Racing Returns To Oliver’s Mount, Scarborough!
Save

The Two Four Three Road Racing Association is proud to announce that road racing will return to Oliver’s Mount this year, with the full backing of Scarborough Borough Council.

Two confirmed meetings; the Barry Sheene Classic on 27th and 28th July and the Gold Cup from 27th to 29th September have already been agreed by the ACU and will take place this year, around the challenging and undulating 2.43mile public road race track.

It’s the news that road race fans have been praying for and, finally, the new club in partnership with GrantRoberts Ltd, can press the button and kick-start the new season.

Road racing is all set to return to England after a year of uncertainty.

Eddie Roberts has been heavily involved from the early stages, and explains:

“Behind the scenes there’s been months and months of planning, there is a huge number of people I need to thank, and finally we can confirm road racing is set to return to Oliver’s Mount.

We are working side-by-side with the ACU and work is already underway to improve the safety of the track for both riders and spectators. We know it’s a huge task to undertake, but we are 100% confident racing will take place at Oliver’s Mount this year.”

Mick Grant, seven times Isle of Man TT winner and multiple winner at Oliver’s Mount said:

“I watched my first road race at Oliver’s Mount in short pants back in the early ‘50s and it ignited my passion for racing, we couldn’t let this historic track crumble into the history books.

We need road racing in England, it’s one of the finest tracks in the world; it’s unique. I can’t wait to hear and witness classic and modern bikes race around this demanding track once again. Today is an emotional and significant day.”

Scarborough Borough Council and its tourism partners are fully behind the new venture and like many race fans, are excited to bring racing back to Scarborough and Yorkshire. Cllr Derek J Bastiman Leader of the Council said:

“This is really exciting news and I am delighted that Eddie and Mick are committed to delivering a bright and exciting future for motorcycle racing at Oliver’s Mount.

I am particularly impressed with their proposals for bringing the circuit in line with the stringent safety requirements set out by the ACU, their passion for the circuit’s unique character and setting and also their heartfelt commitment to attracting a new generation of spectators to the sport.”

Cllr Martin Smith, Scarborough Borough Council, Cabinet Member for Leisure added:

“Racing at Oliver’s Mount has always been an important part of the Yorkshire Coast’s visitor economy. Today’s fantastic news means that role is set to continue and prosper.

Many tourism businesses have been asking me for months when will racing will return to Oliver’s Mount so I’m very pleased that I can finally say 2019 for certain!”

The Two Four Three Road Racing Association would like to take this opportunity to thank the 1946 Marshal Association for their continued support, especially Shaun Dalton.

Are they going to have sidecars? I ask because I have heard a rumour they are not but I hope it's wrong because so many spectators go mainly for the sidecars.

I have heard that they want to keep sidecars at Scarborough. I have heard this from two different, but what I would class as reliable, sources (not at liberty to give details, sorry). As Steve says, time will tell, just have to wait for confirmation one way or the other from the new organisers.
