Update
LATEST STATEMENT FROM AINTREE MCRC. - 26th MAY 2019

Please see below paragraph taken from The A C U Precis Minutes of the third (2019 session) of the Board of Directors

Held at ACU Head office 10th May 2019

14. 1 Road Race Aintree. - They are unable to continue due to storage issues.

It would seem that the ACU is blaming the Club again for our decision not to race this year. This is strictly untrue. The ACU cancelled our track licence which still had two further years to run. Track licence and permits were applied for – with full payment – 15th December 2018. At the end of January this year no documents had been received. Dave Edwards and Paul Buxton had contacted the ACU Road Race department asking when could we expect the documents to arrive and were informed that they were in hand and we should receive them soon. Our regulations had been sent for approval and ratified by the Road Race department.

February arrived and still no documents received from the ACU Road Race Department. Dave E; Paul B and John A phoned the ACU often during February asking when could we expect documents. Again, we were told that they were inundated with work and we should receive them soon. During this time Paul B had signed contracts with St John for medical cover and The Jockey Club for our venue. Also, all other requirements such as straw bales; toilets; tannoy etc had all been booked and verified.

At this time Dave E was being bombarded by riders asking for licence numbers and regulations. Numbers he could deal with but the regulations were still on hold awaiting permit numbers.

Early March after again asking the ACU where our documents were – we were told you have to have another track inspection. Martin Walsh and Norman Williamson made an inspection of the course (on 26th March 2019) and the report from Norman was sent to the ACU and the Club. Owing to the accident the previous September to one of our riders extra safety precautions were being implemented to make the track safer. This entailed a complete coverage of the fence where the rider was injured – also a complete coverage of Bechers Brook. Both of these fences would require around another 200 straw bales – which our supplier could not meet that criteria. Which then meant we would have to purchase 64 rectocil mats – also a storage container would have to be purchased to keep the mats safe. Estimated cost - £16,000. Extra protection would be required along railway straight and other parts of the circuit which we still need a definitive answer on how to put these recommendations into place. Norman also commented in his report that he felt that the spectator area around the bus needs to be pushed right back. He was quite concerned in case a machine flew over the fencing into the crowd. This of course raises another problem – what do we do with the bus.

So, on seeing that Minute from the ACU Directors’ meeting we felt that the statement was unfair and unjust. We telephoned Eddie Nelson for his comments and we requested contact with Dr Paul King. We are pleased to say that Paul King reacted very quickly and phoned us that same evening (8.45pm 24th May 2019)

We put our grievance to Paul King and he agreed that the comments in the Minutes could have been written better - as we pointed out to him it would seem the problem was with the Club yet again – but in fact it was the ACU withdrawing our track licence without communication until early March 2019. He commented that there had been lots of problems with the Insurers demanding more safety protection for the competitors. This stems from the legal action now being pursued by the injured rider Paul King further stated that as an accident had occurred the ACU had to take on board the views of the Insurers. He further commented with regards to the sentence in the Minutes he would put an amendment to it. We thanked him but declined the offer as those Minutes were already in circulation. We reminded Paul King that storage was not the problem – it was all the new safety measures being demanded by the ACU. With regards to these matters the track is causing concern. That even if we purchased the mats to race next year there is no guarantee that the track will be passed ‘fit for purpose’ and it is most unlikely that The Jockey Club would fund this partial re-surface but we are obtaining quotes and will place them before The Jockey Club. We asked Paul King how could we go about getting funding from The National Lottery. His reply – No chance – they do not give money to any motor sports – whether it be bikes; cars; boats and aeroplanes – as these are all deemed dangerous sports.

Our conversation concluded after about 40 minutes - and the Club’s opinion is that the ACU is governed now by Insurers and safety measures. Paul King commented that if he could be of any further help, we could contact him at any time.

We can also confirm that the last postponed three meetings are now cancelled –

July; August and September 2019

The Directors and Committee are still diligently working on all avenues to hopefully resume

Racing in 2020.

Is there not a disclaimer notice when you walk into a circuit regarding your safety at race meetings?? also nobody wants to see anybody hurt but how long has that bus been there and in my time I have never seen anyone coming close to hitting the bus circuit safety should be paramount no question but common sense has to prevail everybody knows the risk when you go racing, problem is to many free solicitors no win no fee, great club Aintree always good racing and the marshals have been first class,as I speak first hand of an accident and a fire, track seems safe to me,safer than Darley by no end,at least you have decent run off areas instead of banking's of earth!!

The disclaimer isn't worth the paper its written on and in fact could be illegal in it's self.
