cheers steve,

thought that might be the case. Which oil would you suggest we use?

Does avgas affect the slides in damp?

Steve's right about the oil - spent a day at Castrol many years ago - and their technical folks were explaining how A747 (if I remember right) was designed to overcome sticking slides...
When we were running our 350 we could never afford the Castrol stuff - we used the best synthetic Morris's - brilliant stuff - cant remember what it's called - will see if I can find an old can when I get a mo'...
I will be talking to Morris's again fairly soon - if plans to get the bike out come to anything....(Morris's is just down the road from us - and I'm hoping that things haven't changed there - you used to be able to speak to folk who knew a bit about oil back then....)
Make sure everything else is "running free" - throttle, cables etc - and of course the best cure as always - is "Don't ride in the ***ing rain....
2 strokes are the future...

in the rules "you can disagree, but do it with respect" :D

I would love to be racing 2 strokes, but as a passenger I never had to rebuild motors every 200 miles lol

I can't think of any reason why it should - maybe someone that really knows about fuel will enlighten us...
One question though - do you have any sort of airbox around your carbs ?
We ran with an almost fully enclosed airbox - with ducted & filtered feed hoses - which tended to keep a lot of the moisture & grit/crap out of the carbs & motor...just a thought...?

Now he wants respect....

And with respect Sir - neither did we - they lasted at least - er - um - about - um - 210.....
Nah joking apart - once we got a good setup - barrel plated by someone Frank Wrathall knew in holland (that barrel has over 1100 miles on it) - Chrome rings and a few other "secrets" - last set of rings we fitted had in excess of 600 miles on them - with little / no measurable wear - (2nd or 3rd set of pistons mind)... :d :d
Have used cranks for over 500 miles (using RG500 big end bearings) - only ever had one failure - and that was a breakage on the timing side on the keyway...
So unreliable 350....nah - hearsay.... :d :d

Hi G Jones.

thanks for the feedback.

We run with just stone gaurds on the carbs no airbox, but I think an airbox is the way to go. Anyone got one they want to sell.

I did check the cables etc and all seemed OK. I will change them anyway as a couple of spares came with the bike.

The engine was built by Alan Steele, from what I hear what Alan doesn't know about TZ's isn't really worth knowing. His bike is very reliable and one of the main reasons I think apart from being built well is the ignition. Can't remeber who makes it but it allows the engine to be run fairly rich while still giving loads of power. More fuel more oil.

I think we will get some 747 for wet races (looks like I'll need a lot) and stick with the rockoil for dry.

I think I must be one of the daft people cos I don't mind riding in rain, apart from not being able to see that is. We've done 4 meetings on a scooter sidecar running mini road tyres so sideways seems to be the norm for us.

cheers

John

Hi G Jones.
thanks for the feedback.
You're welcome... :d
We run with just stone gaurds on the carbs no airbox, but I think an airbox is the way to go. Anyone got one they want to sell.
No - but I should have a mould for making - once again when I have a mo - I will see if I can find it buried under the pile of shi** in my workshop...
I did check the cables etc and all seemed OK. I will change them anyway as a couple of spares came with the bike.
Make sure when you oil them - use something as thin as pi** - also if you haven't got one - get a cable oiler (clamps around the cable and allows you to "push" oil down the full length)
Would be very interested to hear what the ignition is ? - is it a Rex Caunt unit ?
Have always tried to run as rich as possible (within reason) - where most are trying to extract the last few dregs of power by "jetting down" - as long as the motor will "clear it's throat" at the top end - you will be ok - a bit of attention (with some experience) to the midrange - etc,etc - you will need to be checking "colours of things" though.
I think we will get some 747 for wet races (looks like I'll need a lot)
Or phone Morris's - they are (or used to be anyhow) very good - or speak to dennis (trolley) - he used to keep Morris's - not checked lately - or maybe I could go buy a case full and flog it to you at great expense :d :d
and stick with the rockoil for dry.
no, no, no, no.. no, :feuer: Once you decide on something that works for you - stick with it - that's a "proper" racing engine you have there - pay it some respect :headbash: - no good changing it's diet every other day ? - it will be worth it. :d :d
I think I must be one of the daft people cos I don't mind riding in rain,
Correct :d

This may help ??? a while back i had slides that stuck in damp air ( we were burning methanol) We think the prob was iceing,,, we fixed it by rubbing pencil lead (B9) on the contact surfaces,,, the theory was " graphite"it worked well and 1/2 a pencil will last all season ;)

Castrol 747 will cure the problem of stiking slides in the wet on the TZ350 that is what it was designed to do ;)

I did find the airbox mould - but had forgotten I had made a Mk2 version of the airbox after that one - which was much bigger...
I have posted a couple of photos here:-

I don't like to use space here for photos - and they should load real quick on that site (I hope) - downside is that it will request you to register (you will only need to do it once though :d ) - hope that's OK ? :d :d
Edit - Should allow viewing now without login (only just set this up - so learning where all the settings are :d )
