what do the rules actually state concerning tyre size? iran a windle imp in 1974 won acu clubmans and that was on 13 inch goodyear tyres .

From the CRMC eligibility rules:

Wheels may be of the following diameters: 10", 12", 13", 15", 16", 18" or 19". Any currently available type may be used, with the following provisos: the width of the tyre must be in keeping with the period of the machine, and in particular in the case of 10",12",13" and 15" wheels the width of the tread in contact with the track shall not be wider than 140mm or 5.5 inches. Slicks (or hand-cut slicks) are not permitted on any wheel.

The rules on contact patch were changed when Dad started winning on his nsu. Someone on a BSA complained (name uinimportant so many years later) so they said Dad had to use narrower tyres.
He didn't change them, he cut the side of the tread off with a tyre cutter, about 3/8 down each side if I recall correctly. Then he cut 'NSU into the tread to show off his handwriting.
The funny thing was, they were the same size as he used on the bike when he built it, and it was a real classic not rebuild as Woody here and others will recall.

I do recall the tyre width rule being agreed at the AGM of the classic club about 81/2 it was a quick BSA drivers sponsers proposal to the AGM that the max tyre width should be in keeping with the period of the 10 inch mini wheel commonly used at the time. After some discusion at was voted on and acepted as a max tyre width for all diameter wheels. This rule also affected us as well and stopped us using our wider wheels .The effect was nil as you just raced harder.

interesting your Dad had an NSU,when I was a lad about 64/65 a friend who lived up the road from me who was also a draughtsman built I think the first NSU,his name was Bob Pyett,the bike was very quick in fact probably faster than anything in club racing,he was also talking about building a 500 NSU ,either by sleeving the 1000 lump down or cutting it in half cant remeber,I often wonder what happened to his original bike..

Peter, I remember the name Bob Pyett , mum will be able to tell you more than me about him, I'm sure he got dad started on the NSU trail.

So it wasn't just Dad that upset him then Keith - that's a relief

Yes Bob Pyett was the one that got Dad started. he was a friend of Alan Moss [Mossy] he helped your dad doing lots to the bike. That is the reason that l had NSU cars. they were Brilliant, Dad bought the car for the engine took it out and l had the car with the older engine.the first one l had was blue and had been car in a magazine. which l have somwwhere indoors.the engine was £60, but we could have the whole lot for £70 so my first car cost me £10.When we were in France last year Bob showed us one on a forecourt, but it wasnt for sale , if it was l would have bought it. send you pics of that when l find them

The last I heard of Bob Pyett was I think he was living in Brighton,is he still around,I knew him because I went to school with his wifes brothers,I often wonder what happened to the bike

We went to see him one day and his son had fallen out of the shopping trolley and had the biggest black eye.
