Cams and Overheating

Unread post by Pogness »

Just after some thoughts or possibilities on the above.

Not my engine, ZX10 (05) with a set of Kent Cams in, been on the Dyno all good curves etc, all dialled in correctly to Hawk Kawasaki settings, however as the title suggests, 3 laps in it all begins to boil! All cooling system checked run with different engine etc and ok.

Is something obvious been missed eg would to air/fuel mixture be to lean? despite looking fine on the dyno? would the ram air effect cause this the be the case? Or do people think that there may be something else wrong?

Any thoughts much appreciated

Couple of things spring to mind that you could check, do you run a thermastat, if not that could be your problem.
Also have you advanced the ignition timing again this can increase engine running temp.

When you say checked with another engine, you mean another ZX10 I guess.
The thermostat is one good thing to check.
Slowing the water flow throught the system to allow more heat to leave.

More HP means more heat, could be cooling system is marginal (bigger rad, slower water flow)

What are you runing for rad?

Cheers for replies, difficulty is that its not my engine, mine gone sick and will not be fixed in time for next weekend so got the chance to use this one thats got a better dyno reading, however as said runs hot (not on the dyno mind just on track) So in answer to a couple of questions, yes it will have a stat in the system when we run it, different cooling system altogether as would go in our bike (we have never had an problem with cooling), we run a bigger sump etc, so things would be different!...what has been said to me is that the engine runs hot (too hot...boils) on the track due to the ram air, thus leaning the mix........saying that the dyno reading on the engine compared to our standard one is already up on the fuel mix!!! The other difference is that we run a standard air box...with filter...

I didnt think ram air quite worked like that anyway...eg just pressuries the box not actualy rams into the engine..(i will get ready to be corrected on that!)

I know im being vague...open to any suggestions

Does the water stay in it ? we had a liner that dropped once and after 3 laps it did similar, took a while find that did. Head Gasket.. slighlty leaking effect.

Can't imagine the Cams creating an over heating issue..... check for a nut in the hoses as well seen that happen before too.....
blah....blah....blah....
