That is exactly the reason for replica chassis allowed in the original CRMC regs due to fatigue and/or serious damage.
It is true about the sidecar family - you can stop racing but you can never, ever leave!

Possibly down to money I would think Eddy. Lets face it a new chassis is a lot of money (and rightly so given the amount of skill and work required) whereas a complete 'used' outfit would be cheaper. This is the main reason we are using a 40+ year old chassis. Due to the age we now run the chassis unpainted and check it very regularly for any problems.Eddy Wright wrote:Why not have a new one built ?

I would have to agree with Ian on this.
I would be a real shame if all of the true classics were permanently retired and replaced with modern replicas, not only would it make the class and exclusive club for those with the means to finance new kit, it would make it almost impossible for those of us with the want and passion to race (but no money) to do so.
Also where would the variety of outfits go ??
I know safety must be considered but if we look after the aged and treat them as such i see no reason why older outfits cant be kept on track with some restoration and tlc.

My bike an original built by Windle in the early 70s. The point I was making is why not have a new chassis built not a complete bike. I bought my chasis from Ivan Ducker who makes the lynx Chassis. Ivan bought the windle as a complete running imp. Took everything from it he needed to build it in to one of his Lynx Chassis. Nick Robinson races the bike now. Which is really my bike less the Windle chassis if you get my drift.
It is always a pity when an old chassis becomes too fatigued to repair, and the Gristwoods are to be applauded for realising this. But they could go and buy another Original Bike between £7/10k and find thats knackered too.
If they used all the running gear from the original it would be a big saving, and they would have a safer machine.

. Or have you got the old tubes. If thats the case you need some new ones before they fall apart

You are right Ed, we could end up buying another problem, but we have very limited free time (and little engineering skills) and would much rather buy a sorted outfit than build another frame and then have to get and new brackets and fixings fabricated. Having been though this before I know it costs many £,000's and months to complete.
The Winstanley frame positioned the engine much further to the left than the Windle frame and various other things were fairly unique so it wouldn't be a simple job to transfer the brackets/fixings.
The destroyed frame was checked by someone I have a lot of faith in and it didn't just have a few issues but had multiple cracks, very corroded tubes and many past repairs. Oh, and the head stock had pretty much detached from the frame. We are just glad nobody got hurt riding the thing and annoyed we didn't get it properly checked earlier.
So, it would be nice to be able to get a sorted Imp outfit that doesn't race with the club to add another to the grid. We have four to look at so far but if any of you know someone that has a very good sorted outfit, that would be easy to get out by Darley, please let me know.

Just heard on the grapevine, Ivan Ducker (Lynx Frames) has recently had a road accident,is in hospital with Sternum and foot injuries,if anyone is around Kings Lynn wanting to pay a visit,he is in Gayton Ward,Queen Elizabeth Hospital,Gayton Road,Kings Lynn.PE30 4ET.
Somebody has just unloaded a ton of Play-Doh on my driveway! I don't know what to make of it !
