TT Newcomers Award

Art the moment the only award is for a newcomer TEAM...perhaps some kind person will put up worthwhile awards for best new passenger/best new driver... who knows?

Sorry Dips, should have remembered you and Dougie. Re Dan in 2002 I seem to recall that they were the best to finish both races but checking the two sets of results, Simon and Gary were best in race 1(retired in race 2) and Glyn Jones with Dan Sayle best in race 2 (retired in race 1). Perhaps when Dan C gets up this week he will tell all As for 2003,4,5,6???? Methinks they may have changed the 'overall' bit over the years.

In 2002 me and Nigel (Mayers) were second best newcomers in the first race with Simon and Gary being best newcomers. In the second race we were best newcomers, as stated Simon and Gary crashed out at the Gooseneck. Simon and Gary were awarded the Best Newcomers Trophy, I thought it was because they had done the fastest time but it could have been because of the highest position (a lot better than us on both counts). Nigel and myself were, therefore, best overall newcomers on finishing positions in both races but that doesn't seem to count for a newcomers award although certain other awards are given for overall positions taking both races in to account. Glyn Jones wasn't classed as a newcomer as he had raced the Mountain circuit on a solo, at least I think that was the reason but I do know that Glyn wasn't too pleased about it. Back then if either the driver or passenger had raced on the Mountain circuit then the team could not be classed as newcomers. I think it has changed now though and as I understand it a passenger who now becomes a driver would be classed as a newcomer (somebody will correct me if that isn't so)
Newcomers Awards (not the Newcomers Trophy) are awarded, or were, to the three best newcomer teams in each race, although for some reason only two were presented for the second race in 2002, I think there were more than two newcomer finishers. Anyway me and Nigel got two Newcomer Awards and were well chuffed, not bad for an old un..........the bike I mean of course, it was a 17 year old converted 350 Derbyshire chassis.

No, if you race as a passenger/driver/ solo rider, you can never again be a newcomer, I am told. And if you are best overall, but someone else has one finish better than yours..eg..1 second place, as opposed to 2 thirds, the higher place wins... a kind of wheeled poker!

I think you have been told wrong Helen, unless the rules have been changed again since the entry forms were issued.

Extract from 2010 TT entry form:
d) Newcomers
For the purpose of these regulations a “Newcomer” is a person who has not previously taken part in a race on the TT Course or qualifi ed to do
so. A previous TT sidecar passenger will be regarded as a newcomer driver or solo rider. A previous TT solo rider will be regarded as a newcomer
sidecar driver or passenger and a previous TT sidecar driver will be regarded as a newcomer solo rider.


But how does this affect the winner of the Newcomer Trophy which is still presented as stated on the same entry form:
Peter Chapman Trophy
To the sidecar newcomer with the highest placed finish in any sidecar race during the meeting. Both members of the crew never having started
or qualified to start in a sidecar race on the TT course prior to the meeting.

Whatever happens, it needs clarifying by the organisers before the races so that the trophy is presented to the rightful winner at the time and not months later.

I was third newcomer in race A 2006 (first year driver but had passengered before), got a little engraved plate with my finishers medal. Race B was same but no little plate just the medal.

hummm --wayne lockey & kerry williams best newcomer 2006---- but it was kerry,s 3rd TTas passenger, think there was 3 or 4 newcomer teams -- now theres a thing don.t you no

to get a newcomers award means just that you have to be a new commer weather be it passenger or driver but to get the peter chapmen trophy you both (driver an passenger) have to have never competed at the tt befor
but it seams the organisers of the tt seam to award it to who'm ever they seen fit on the night

i won best newcomer in 2004 with Neil Kelly who had passengered before but never driven. not quite sure how it was worked out cuz we were fastest in the first race but second fastest (just behind elmer) in the second race but i can't remember if Elmer finished both races....either way wot a superb trophy to get ya name on....good luck to all who are going for it this year

Here 's an idea why don't we organize a combination award IE best result for new driver, experienced passenger / experienced driver, new passenger?
They also should do one for best team support for all the guys /gals who work tirelessly behind the scenes. Having been there myself I know how hard this is!

I'm confused, surely after you have completed the first race then you cannot be classed as a newcomer anymore? I though that was how it worked.

1995 Ian Bell- Craig Hallam, Michael How was it then that Tom Hanks got the Peter Chapman trophy after passengering Roy for years ?. Then Vince Butler in his only TT as a driver was the best newcomer in both races but was not given the award.The reason was because he had passengered Rob Fisher in 93. I was the riders rep then and was asked to plead his case, to no avail
