1979 Southern 100 - one for Geoff Bell

Unread post by john newton »

Have been looking through the race programme. At no.23 are young newcomers Geoff Bell and Vic Cowell. So, Geoff and anyone else, who were the other newcomers that year?
There was one from Goole still doing well at the TT, and one from York still winning TT replicas but in the chair these days and another who came 2nd that year and won a host of Southern 100 races, who sadly was also in the news this year. Mick Harvey was in the programme but I think was a non-starter but who was his world champion-to-be passenger? Also listed in the 61(!) entrants are Steve Abbott/Shaun Smith, one Anthony Baker and John Tindal, Eddy and John Wright, Jim Norbury and Bernie Wright......Michael Burcombe and Derek Rumble won and one more Geoff, who came third on his debut in the Solo Championship?

Newcomers-- Brian Alflatt, Dave Wells. Lowry Burton. Simon Birchal was Mick Harveys passenger and our Ian finished third as a newcomer in the Solo Championship. Ian led the race and had a ten second lead at one stage. The clutch was slipping towards the end, the rear brake pads fell out on the last lap and it started running out of fuel. George Fogarty and Joey Dunlop ( also on TZ750s) got by him on the last lap. :D
