Dave was a very aggressive driver who had several top places. He shone at Crystal Palace where I think he held
the lap record for a time. Most of the time he rode with Bill Garwood, and then Arthur [Pud] Poulton, with whom he
had a massive accident at Mallory's Devils Elbow in March 1964. Dave blamed Norman Hanks but it was probably
just a racing accident.[ Dave was a hard man but Norman was the toughest along with Brian Rust]
Dave was unconcious for several days and never reced again.

He sold his ETY Vincent to Dennis Komly who was passengered by Chris Nicklels [hence the Komnick team was born]
I met Dave at our local biker cafe 'Teds' at Woodford which was frequented by several sidecar lads including Roy Pike,
Pete Hardcastle, Les Wells and myself. Another competitor who was there [dont remember his name] had a girlfriend
who eventualy became Mrs Pauline Hailwood.

Ted Young lived in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire. He was a regular competitor at Brands and Crystal Palace late 50s and 60s on home built outfits entered as ETY Triumph ot ETY Vincent, quite a good driver.

His younger brother Lewis rode Tom Kirby 7Rs and G50s for several seasons and was a good International rider.
It is true about the sidecar family - you can stop racing but you can never, ever leave!

Perhaps my memory is incorrect, could Dave have purchased it from Denis instead ? Ted young and his team
built many outfits. Myself and Jim Mann bought his original Triumph kneeler which was quite old by then for the
1965 season. It was one of the first kneelers and has telescopic front forks, which we used to grease to reduce
the shrieking on right handers when the tyre rubbed the forks. We sold it to Dick Maplethorpe after one season

The first time I met Chris Nickels and Dennis was at the Stars of Tomorrow meeting at Mallory in 1965. Towards
the end of practice Dennis turned right at the Esses back into the paddock. He had not signalled to Chris who
switched from right to left just as the outfit turned right. He took a heavy tumble but was able to race later.

It's all starting to add up because Chris said Ted was the first man to introduce the kneeler. I assume the Vincent was sold to fund the building of the mini engined bike which Chris still races. I'll check with him who they sold it to after he gets back from Holland. He's gone over to party with Kobus as he is 50. A mere youngster !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
