Road racing in uk
Why don't we have road racing in uk ( except the mount)is it a written rule, opposition from councils, police or is it something legal about Lifting a speed limit on a road. I'm not talking about major roads. Everybody probably has a road near there home they wish it could legally be raced down or is it me.
We broke something, I think it was traction….........

Re: Road racing in uk
Basically its against the law, laws were made to prevent racing on public roads after several fatal incidents, hence the reason we went ta isle of man. It would involve and act of parliment to change the law and its not a big enough vote winner for anyone to bother.

Yes, it would require an Act of Parliament, and that's seriously big stuff.

Re: Road racing in uk
We can all say, this road would make a good race track...we often do! When we were in Australia, going from The Atherton Tablelands down to Cairns there were over 200 bends all downhill with severe drop on the right hand side
think it was called the Gillies. The Pendennis MCC used to have a roadrace around Pendennis Castle in Falmouth but that got stopped when they built a swimming pool/leisure centre next door to the castle.

Hey! hang on a minute . . .

Re: Road racing in uk
There used to be a road race around the streets of Birmingham, I wonder how that came about, without an act of Parliament, do local councils have the authority to sanction them on a one off basis.

Re: Road racing in uk
At last count we have 6 street races in NZ, 4 in the South Island and 2 in the North Island one of which will be having it's 60th anniversary this year, this is a probably a fraction of what there used to be, there are also two new street meetings in the South being planned as well
Sidecars currently only race at the two up North but will be on the program if one of the new Southern street races gets off the ground

Dont Know how you dont know about Borders Race of the Reivers, Check it out on facebook, I had a lap of the circuit with 2 of the team behind it last weekend, 11 mile lap in some parts very like Dundrod circuit, I spent the whole afternoon with these guys, and must have fired hundreds of questions at them, Every question was answered very positively, of course I asked about road closure orders and objections, beleive me these guys have done their homework, THIS IS GOING TO HAPPEN. I have been given the honour of helping promote the event and my outfit will show this soon, its first apearance will be at the Southern 100 in 3 weeks time, If you would like any more info, Please go on the facebook page and click your support or message me on here. Thanks Alan Warden

Re: Road racing in uk
wirral 100 ran an annual meeting on new brighton prom for many years, which I believe only stopped due to one of the utility companies destroying the surface when laying some pipes. This and Birmingham car race suggest that it is indeed possible. It was also tried in the 80,s on anglesy but never happened due to local opposition. The good thing to come out of that effort was the dicovery of the site of the present Trac Mon.

Re: Road racing in uk
Oh yeah, New Brighton seafront, best bit was going the wrong way round a roundabout!
The Northeast London MCC (now a trials club) ran road races around Alexandra Palace in the 1930s but I believe that although on roads they were actually private.

It is true about the sidecar family - you can stop racing but you can never, ever leave!

Re: Road racing in uk
Sadly there was indeed a fatality at the Last meeting held on the Prom which may have had some bearing on it,s demise. I heard at the time it was due to the codition of the track on the seawall side due to pipe laying that the ACU refused to sanction it. It was a long standing event and was most certainly held on the public highway, which was my original point. Aberdare is a path on which to take a stroll through the park. It is also a great meeting with a unique atmosphere and a must visit at least once event, the only thing lacking being sidecars, and if memory serves me well solo,s are restricted to 600cc max. I am told that sidecars have raced there but not had the privelige of seeing that, which is maybe a good thing given my dicky ticker. I should think KEW would be the man who would know about that.
