yokohama tyres
Does anyone know the Yokohama alternative to the Avon 5 x 22 x13 for classic racing. Some people use Yokos abroad any ideas ?

Re: yokohama tyres
Hi Mike,
It's the AO48R. I would guess the 175/60/13. Think the contact patch is about 6" although there has been some arguing about that. I think the P4 machines can run them. The Roeberry's did. Last time I looked they were not allowed on the P3 bikes. Would have to check with Ian now.
Martin, I think you had the 10" AO32R.

Re: yokohama tyres
I have used these tyres on my Imp. They really are very good and exceptional in the wet. Contact patch is about the same as the Avon. However it depends on how it's measured. They are readily available last about twice the time, and they are half the price.

Re: yokohama tyres
I'm almost certain the 13" version is illegal, I would speak to Ian first as this saves people getting upset when their told the tyres are illegal and they have to change them. As far as I'm aware there's only the avon and Dunlop green spot available for 13" in the crmc obviously abroad is a different matter.

Re: yokohama tyres
You perfectly correct Jason. However the same tyre fitted on a 10" or a 12" rim (as the Roeburys run) if perfectly within the club rules. So if it's wet and you have 13" rims you are at a disadvantage.

Re: yokohama tyres
You are right Jason. This was discussed at length at the AGM about 3 years ago. They have been allowed on the P4 bikes though.

Re: yokohama tyres
Fitted Yokos today
Cant see why not legal with CMRC because of the radius on the edges there is LESS contact patch
The only thing I can think is they work in a different way to the Avon and roll in corners to get contact
Also there rolling radius is 12mm smaller than Avon not that this makes any difference.

Re: yokohama tyres
Mike, I mentioned the contact patch to crmc officials and their reply was that it was wider than 5.5" so how they come to that conclusion i don't know.I have rolled a 13" Yoko pumped up on a wheel ,I inked the tyre and it didn't exceed 5.5 , but they still wouldn't allow it.mrequipe wrote:Fitted Yokos todayCant see why not legal with CMRC because of the radius on the edges there is LESS contact patch

Re: yokohama tyres
The problem was due to the fact that it didn't fit through the frame device that Ian inherited from his predecessor due to the bulge of the tyre wall (or maybe the roll you mention Mike).
Makes sense to allow them if it is a cost saving and the contact patch is within limits.
John, I seem to remember you mentioning that you had done a footprint of the contact patch that had proved in was within limits?
