Sidecar TT missing chassis/engine

Could anyone confirm the chassis for the Bingham's. I assume Padgett's were simply the sponsor?

I think you have a massive problem to list all the chassis as most of the programme entries were the sponsors and not the actual chassis manufacturer. In the early days the sitters would have been the original machine (e.g. Norton, Matchless, Vincent etc.) with a sidecar chassis by Watsonian or Steib etc. When kneelers evolved they were originally cut down versions of the original bike, and there were a lot of home built chassis by the individual drivers or their mechanics etc. In the late fifties and early sixties chassis were manufactured and sold by people like Owen Greenwood, RGM etc. and later Fiddaman, Windrick (later just Windle), Ireson and so on and more recently Dave Molyneux. Lots of the German outfits used a Busch chassis.Our outfit which won the 1968 750cc sidecar TT was actually built by Terry Vinicombe himself but I bet you have it down as a Kirby BSA, Tom Kirby being the sponsor. After the fitting of the front hydraulic disc brake (the first outfit to have one) it was entered at many events as a Kirby Metisse (Rickman having manufactured the disc hub). I hope I got all this right, no doubt someone will tell me if I haven't.

Hi, sorry i should just clarify i am not expecting to go right back with this. I currently have a nearly complete list back to 1984 with a handful more to 1980. If i could just fill in the gaps listed above i'll be happy with that. Just want to make sure history is recorded as accurately as possible but im aware the further back you go the more difficult it gets.

1992 Geoff Bell – Yamaha - he was on a Jacobs chassis with passenger Keith Cornbill.

Geoff's son supplied the info.

What about the passengers? They also stood on the podium.

Heynesy, one of you erlier post's mentioned Geoff being "sadly missed". I think thats what Steve meant when he thought you got confused with Ian.

Trust me sidecar passengers are very much a part of my project. Just because i've not listed them above doesn't meen they are forgotten about.
It took me a long while to track down the names of the passengers for the early sidecar TT's in the mid 1920's.

Yep - typo about sadly missing the wrong Bell.

As Steve said - it's definitely Geoff Bell in a Yamaha in 1992.

Tom Hanks - Yamaha

Hanks family have just confirmed that.

Mick Boddice's chassis in the 90's were Ireson's.

Dave Molyneux 1994 engine was a Yamaha FZR600.

I would have to check, but I think Dennis Brown was on a long wheelbase Baker chassis in 1989. I think in 1985 both Dave Hallam and Dennis Bingham were on Windle chassis. Same goes for Steve Abbott and Dave Hallam in 1984.

Thanks for the info Tim, it is a massive help, if you could check the above it would be great, its just ive put a massive amount of work into this project so want to ensure its all correct.

Are you sure Richard Crossley was on a Yamaha? Everything i have (race programme, results book, MCN, tt website) say he was on a Honda. Cheers

I've heard others say the Binghams raced Windle chassis but looking around their results in the British/European series at the time they were on LCR's. Is it possible they raced different chassis for the TT?

Dave Molyneux's 1992 chassis was indeed the first one he built, albeit using the forks, wheels and swinging arm from an old TZ750 outfit. I believed them to be Windle.
It wasn't actually nominated as a 'DMR' when Dave entered it.
I bought the bike off Dave at the end of 1992 and entered it as a 'Molyneux' thereafter.
The bike is the one in my avatar picture and is now being restored by Trevor Speer in Enniskillen NI.
It was in a very sorry state when he found it.

Lowry Burton used a Baker chassis in 1984, 1985 and 1987.
Richard Crossley used a Yamaha FZR engine (built by me, for Jim Norbury) for his Jacobs chassis.
Steve Abbott and the Binghams both used Windle chassis at the TT (Greg Noble now owns the ex Abbott machine)

Just one final question regarding Nigel Rollason.
It's my understanding (excuse my ignorance) that the Barton Phoenix was only the engine in the outfit? Was he using a separate chassis, windle, baker, ireson etc?
