Chassis strength

Unread post by TonyW »

Lots of tubular chassis I've seen nowadays seem to undergo (or have done in the past) many major structural changes to accomodate different engines etc , only thing I remember having done welding wise in the late 70's/early 80's was maybe to change a handhold, gear change rod or remove a front exit handhold ! plus also a lot of re-welding now may be done by folk who aren't possibly 'experienced enough' with welding gear ???

How much chopping, changing, re-structuring, welding (in particular) can a chassis take before it becomes 'unsafe' or weaker than when it was originally made, especially taking into consideration that these things are taken around circuits as fast as possible.

Just a thought ...............

Its a good point Tony, I think common sense should prevail by taking to a reputable builder to check over or do the modification, but what is the guarantee also as tube can crack internally as well,I had a new chassis built which developed a crack, just a material problem which was sorted, even new chassis have bits come away so its difficult I guess to be 100% Tony, but yes its a good point.
