FIM World Sidecar Championship round two Assen
Preview from Mark Walters
“Cathedral of speed” welcomes sidecars.
The world famous 4.555km, Assen TT circuit, known as the “Cathedral of Speed”. Will host round two of the FIM Sidecar World Championship, supporting the World Superbike Championship.
Todd Ellis and Emmanuelle Clement will be on a high as they come fresh from Le Mans leading the championship with 45 points, over last year’s champions Markus Schlosser and Marcel Fries who have 41 points. Tim Reeves and Kevin Rousseau sit in third place with 36 points. Reeves and Rousseau will be wanting to capitalize on their great knowledge of the Assen track and will be hoping for wins.
Stephen Kershaw and Ryan Charlwood have 26 points in fourth place, both driver and passenger like this circuit a lot, they will be hoping for podium places here.
Lukas Wyssen and Thomas Hofer will want to forget their jump start in race 2 at Le Mans and get it all right this weekend; they have 20 points and are 5th.
Paul Leglise and Melanie Farnier had a good weekend in Le Mans, driver Leglise has a new bike so he was getting used to it, although they had a bit of contact in race 2 with Wyssen and Hofer, they were really pleased how things went, they will arrive in Assen in sixth spot with 20 points.
Claude and Cyril Vinet sit in seventh place with13 points, the team were not so happy with race 2 in Le Mans, but that behind them they are looking forward to the weekend in Assen
Ted and Vincent Peugeot will want to forget the first race in Assen, they DNF, after a spin causing, the local Bennie Streure here in Assen, to collide he was to DNF too. But despite this they still sit eighth in the championship with 12 points
Streuer with his passenger Kevin Kolsch will forget about Le Mans, they will be going out for glory here at Assen. Being the local man from Grolloo only 5 minutes down the road he certainly knows his way round this track. And his new passenger Kolsch has been here before. They sit way down in sixteenth spot with 3 points.
Harry Payne and Mark Wilkes had a huge crash in Le Mans, their machine was a wreck, they did not manage to contest the first race, but they had the loan of another machine, and were deemed fit to race, they finished in eighth place. They will have their machine ready for Assen.
Another team who will want to put Le Mans behind them is Kevin Cable and Charlie Richardson, they had a good race 1, finishing in eighth place. Race 2 however was a disaster, they were going well when they hit gear change problems, they had quick shifter problems. They will hope they can rectify this issue.
There will be a couple of French teams missing from Assen, but nonetheless the action will be hot at the front.
Again there will be two 18 lap races. The first on Saturday at 17:00 local time, and the second will be 16:15 local time Sunday.
