Worlds Gold race report from Mark Walters
“Schlosser and Schmidt take race two win”
It was sunny but a cool breeze was all around the track in Oschersleben for the start of the 21 lap race.
The lights went out and Markus Schlosser and Luca Schmidt got the whole shot into the first series of bends, not for the want of trying Harry Payne and Kevin Rousseau did try and make a move for the lead in turn two but this was not to be. Tim Reeves and Mark Wilkes were on the inside line with Bennie Streuer and Kevin Kolsch alongside, Reeves and Wilkes drifted out wide in turn two letting Streuer and Kolsch through. Pekka Paivarinta and Adam Christie were next up with Sam and Tom Christie next, Todd Ellis and Emmanuelle Clement slotted in behind the Christie Brothers with Lukas Wyssen and Ema Salmon next. Ted and Vincent Peugeot were just in front of Lennard Gottlich and Lucas Krieg, Sam and Jack Laidlow were next. There was a small gap then Luke Williams and Ruben Janssens were just in front of Patrick Werkstetter and Valantin Pirat, alongside was Rupert Archer and Thomas Hofer, Paul Leglise and Marjorie Cescutti were next up just in front of Markus Venus and Ondrej Sedlacek, Kevin Cable and Charlie Richardson were just in front of Pierre Leguen and Leopold Rouby, Raymond and Calvin Leijdekkers with Rogier Weekers and Remco Moes alongside brought up the rear of the field.
Lap two saw disaster for Sam and Tom Christie, they tried to make a pass on Paivarinta and Christie going down into the first corner they ran straight on, getting it a bit out of shape passenger Tom tried his best to hang on but in the end he had to let go. Despite this, he and Sam were both okay, but a DNF for them.
Instead of seven, it was down to six to battle it out at the front.
Schlosser and Schmidt were still out in front with Payne and Rousseau second, Streuer and Kolsch were sitting in third and the two leaders were not getting away from them, Reeves and Wilkes were in fourth but they were putting pressure on Streuer and Kolsch for third, lap three saw Reeves and Wilkes make the pass, but there was a bit of fairing rubbing in the overtake, this was to let the leading pair make a fair gap on the rest of the field.
Like yesterday’s race there was a great battle between Wyssen/Salmon, the Peugeots, and the Laidlow Brothers, this was to last the whole race, Wyssen and Salmon were in front but the other two teams were passing and re passing each another throughout the race.
Lap eight saw Reeves and Wilkes go straight on at the end of the back straight into the gravel trap then onto the grass, their race was run, they had brake problems. Lap nine saw Williams and Janssens pull into pit lane to DNF, they had handling problems. Lap thirteen saw Streuer and Kolsch DNF, they found that their fairing fitting had been damaged, making it loose, they did continue for a good few laps but in the end it was too bad to continue.
On lap nine, Payne and Rousseau got passed Schlosser and Schmidt and started to make a small gap, with Reeves and Wilkes out Streuer and Kolsch were back in third until they were to pull out in lap thirteen, this let Paivarinta and Christie take the place for third, but Ellis and Clement were catching them. For the rest of the race these two teams were very close to each another, Ellis and Clement did battle hard and it looked like they could have made a pass, but Paivarinta and Christie were too strong for them.
And still the battle raged on behind between Wyssen/Salmon, The Peugeot’s and the Laidlows, with each team trying to get the better of the other.
On the last lap it looked like Payne and Rousseau had the win in the bag, but Schlosser and Schmidt had other ideas, they timed it to perfection and made the pass, they took the race win by 0.502, to the delight of the team, Payne and Rousseau took second gracefully, and were first to congratulate the winners.
A great third place for Paivarinta and Christie, the team were delighted with this result.
Ellis and Clement tried their hardest for the third place and were not far off, but in the end fourth was their result, but they were happy with this.
A delighted Wyssen and Salmon took fifth, just in front of the Laidlow Brothers who got the better of the Peugeot’s in the end.
Leglise and Cescutti fought hard throughout the race and were rewarded with a good eighth place.
Werkstetter and Pirat finished off their weekend with a ninth place, great considering they had a lot of work to do to their machine after damage sustained from a technical problem.
Gottlich and Krieg rounded off the top ten, a good weekend for the team.
Archer and Hofer took eleventh, good for them after a DNF yesterday.
Venus and Sedlacek finished in twelfth place, the team is happy with this as they had no grip on the rear from half distance.
Cable and Richardson took Thirteenth, another good weekend for the team with no problems.
Leguen and Rouby, Leijdekkers, Weekers and Moes took 14th, 15th, and 16th respectfully.
The next and final round will be in Estoril, Portugal, that will be in November.
