Preview from Mark Walters

🔎 Harry Payne and Kevin Rousseau defend slim 2025 FIM Sidecar World Championship lead at Assen

Visiting the TT Circuit Assen for the second round in a row, the sixth and penultimate round of the 2025 FIM Sidecar World Championship this coming weekend (20-21 September) at the fabled ‘Cathedral of Speed’ could prove to be pivotal with reigning champions Harrison Payne (ARS Yamaha) and Kevin Rousseau holding an extremely slender eleven-point lead ahead of British brothers Sam and Thomas Christie (LCR Yamaha).

With the Swiss/German pairing of Markus Schlosser (LCR Yamaha) and Luca Schmidt only another ten points off the pace – and a potential fifty points on the line for any crew that can double up to win both Saturday’s ten-lap Sprint race and Sunday’s sixteen-lap Main race – the top three positions in the championship could be turned upside down over the course of the weekend.

#FIM | #FIMsideCar

Although five-time FIM Sidecar Rider World Champion Pekka Päivärinta (ARS Yamaha) and Adam Christie – the third of the Christie brothers in action this weekend – have scored podium finishes this season, the Finnish/British pairing is a distant fourth and realistically out of title contention, ensuring the focus will be firmly on the three leading crews.

It has been a season of highs and lows for the British/French pairing of Payne and Rousseau who have suffered two mechanical DNFs this year, the first coming at the opening round at Le Mans which gifted an early lead to Schlosser and Schmidt. The reigning champions struck back at Estoril and the Pannónia-Ring with three wins and a second, although after they appeared to restore control with victory in the Sprint race at Most, an engine problem resulted in a second DNF.

When the championship made its first visit of the year to Assen in the middle of August, it was Schlosser and Schmidt who shared the lead with the super-consistent Christie brothers – who have yet to finish a race off the podium this season – but Payne and Rousseau once again fought back.

A dominant double win – only their second of the season – saw them reclaim the championship lead, however with just this weekend’s action and the final round at Oschersleben in Germany on the first weekend of October left on the calendar, there is certainly no room for complacency.

With an impressive entry of twenty crews in action at Assen, the world-famous circuit – that has featured on the FIM Sidecar World Championship every year the series has been staged since 2013 – may feel slightly narrower than normal and solid qualification times will be essential to elevate the title contenders out of the pack and towards the front of the grid for both races.

The points-scoring action from Assen is due to get under way on Saturday (20 September) with the ten-lap Sprint race at 17:25 (local time) with the sixteen-lap Main race scheduled for Sunday (21 September) at 16:20 (local time).

WATCH LIVE 🔴 20–21 September – The remaining rounds of the 2025 FIM Sidecar World Championship will be streamed LIVE on FIM-MOTO.TV.

Practice report from Mark Walters

Assen, free practice 2.

With the sun still shining down on the Assen circuit the sidecar teams took to the track for free practice two.

With a few teams having problems in practice one this would be the time to see if all was better for them before qualifying tomorrow.

Paul Leglise and Marjorie Cescutti managed to change an engine, but they still have some small problems to sort out before tomorrow. Ezra Brouwer and Palmira Ter Steeg did not manage to get out in this session. Ben Birchall and Paddy Rosney fared better in this session, but they still have problems, but they did set at time, which was a 1:47.549. Rob Biggs and Ferry Segers improved their time but still have gear change issues. Lewis Nicol and Clement Conil also improved their time but later in the session their machine just stopped, so they will be looking at that problem.

Markus Schlosser and Luca Schmidt seem to have sorted their handling problem, because it was them who set the fastest time in this session, which was a 1:44.264.

Harry Payne and Kevin Rousseau had technical problems in this session, but their time from session one is still good for second fastest.

Sam and Tom Christie felt better with their machine in this session than they did in the first; they set a time of 1:44.583, good for third fastest overall.

As in session one, another great session for Lewis Blackstock and Oscar Lawrence, their best time in session two was a 1:44.799, good for fourth fastest.

Pekka Paivarinta and Adam Christie did not improve in this session but their session one time is good for fifth fastest.

A good second session for Sam and Jack Laidlow, a time of 1:46.163 gives them the sixth fastest time; they are happy with this and are checking over their machine for qualifying tomorrow.

Todd Ellis and Emmanuelle Clement set the seventh fastest time, a 1:46.173, they are still trying to solve some handling and drive issues that they have been having all season, they are working on this problem.

Patrick Werkstetter and Valentin Pirat are happy with their session two time of 1:46.185, they have not had any problems and hope qualifying will be better for them.

Bennie Streuer and Manon Vissenberg are happy with what they have done today, they were running in an engine in session one and they improved their lap time in session two to a 1:46.442, good for ninth.

Birchall and Rosney are tenth fastest and will hope to solve their problem before tomorrow.

Leglise and Cescutti will hope for better tomorrow.

Rupert Archer and Ondrej Sedlacek set the twelfth fastest time, a 1:48.009; they had no problems and will be looking to go better tomorrow in qualifying.

Biggs and Segers are thirteenth.

Kevin Cable and Charlie Richardson went faster in session two; they had no problems and set a time of 1:49.037.

Markus Venus and Thomas Hofer missed out the last time here and feel they need more laps; they set a time of 1:50.142, good for fifteenth.

Nicol and Conil, sixteenth.

Rob Atkinson and Mark Middleton are relishing the experience learning and racing here in Assen, they are seventeenth fastest, they hope for better in qualifying tomorrow.

Rogier Weekers and Lex Deemter set a time of 1:58.565, putting them eighteenth.

Depending on the weather tomorrow, a lot of teams today had well-worn tyres on; tomorrow will be new rubber, so we could see improvements with lap times.

The one and only qualifying session will start at 11.50 local time.

Qualifying report from Mark Walters

Assen, qualifying.

“Christie Brothers on pole”

It was sunny and warm for the only qualifying session in Assen, as the sidecar teams lined up to head out on track, who would come out on top.

The top three teams are so close who knows who will come out top in the races.

Sam and Tom Christie did not do many laps in qualifying, but they set a blistering time of 1:42.718 on their fourth of five laps. They will head the grid with this. Right on their heels is Markus Schlosser and Luca Schmidt; they set a time of 1:42.808. taking the third spot, and heading the second row is Harry Payne and Kevin Rousseau, they set a time of 1:42.845.

Pekka Paivarinta and Adam Christie will line up next to Payne and Rousseau in fourth spot; they set a time of 1:43.912

Heading row three is Lewis Blackstock and Oscar Lawrence, they are having a great weekend as a wildcard entry, they set a time of 1:44.278. Todd Ellis and Emmanuelle Clement will line up next to Blackstock and Lawrence; they set a time of 1:44.770

Bennie Streuer and Manon Vissenberg, they are really pleased with their seventh fastest time, it is a 1:45.050, and they head the fourth row. Next to them is Paul Leglise and Marjorie Cescutti, they have had some problems over the weekend so far but they finished qualifying in eighth, with a time of 1:45.135.

Row five is headed by Sam and Jack Laidlow, they set a time of 1:45.186. Lining up next to the Laidlow’s is Patrick Werkstetter and Valentin Pirat, their time was a1:45.513.

That is the top ten; the times are close throughout the field. There is a good spectator attendance here this weekend so if the races turn out like they have done this season so far they will have plenty to cheer about.

Hopefully it will stay dry, but the clouds are coming.

The 10 lap sprint race will start at 17.35 local time.
