I still stand by what I said, BUY IT!. I'm not being sentimental but it is part of sidecar history, same as your old man . Metal is simple to repair if the odd tube needs replacing, if it goes abroad you will regret it for the rest of your life. I doubt some of the guy's who have put comments up here were even around when your dad raced it . Don't let it slip away, buy the bloooodily thing.

Too true. Would I buy it? If I had the money (and no obsession for Triples!) then absolutely. Too many old / original bikes seem to just fade away. I really hope you and your family can get the money together . Please keep us posted and good luck

Yes IanW a few rotten tubes would not deter me either I would much rather have an the real deal than a modern replica no one can reproduce the originality and patina of an original no matter how hard they try and yes as someone else mentioned please keep us informred of your progress best of luck

ANP Perhaps a headstock coming off an "ORIGINAL" bike and a few rotten tubes may make you think again Ive seen it and on more than one If it wasnt for mordern classics you would have half a grid if that. Why do people buy mordern classics? because there cheaper, safer and more reliable

After giving the tubing a good coat of looking at & then making a decision as to the exterior condition,
if I then had concerns I would get in " bombed" ( NDT ).
That is the only way to judge the condition of the tubing & welds.
Corrosion only happens if air is present, if the welds are intact then there can be no corrosion from inside out. Still say buy it & I agree with anp

I do fully understand that old bike may be in a dangerous condition no one in their right mind would want to ride a bike that had rotten tubes or worse what I meant was personally I would rather have an old original bike restored it may cost more than a new replica but it would have the character that it deservedly gained over the years

grid numbers, cost and reliabilty did not come into my thinking on this one

Without doubt the modern replicas are fabulous bits of kit and like all new outfits are tremendous value for money but its not what I like

It would be great for these guys to buy this bike and have it restored and keep it going for a few more years

I love the plain BMW paint schemes of the likes of George Auerbacher & Roger, plain metallic without the " Enders" stripe that everyone with replicas seem's to go for.

Hope you guys have bought this Bmeer . Last season i remember a MODERN Classic Chassis breaking the frame tubes to the headstock, not so Safer and more reliable., as someone suggested. Cant remember ???? the rider but it was a BMW. look forward to seeing your Outfit when it is renovated .

i heard about that modern classic too and so have a few of my mates -- but now i know the full story of said modern classic it was not the fault of the builder

don't make a mountain out of this downtube breaking iv'e seen every frame there was and it's not an uncommon fault .

The the down tubes in this case are not an issue.. The point is we have a piece of racing history at stake here. I would suggest you just buy it. If you really want it you will raise the cash. Lets not bang on about replicas most of the guys running at the front in Solo races on Manx Nortons 7Rs and G50s are riding replicas. You want this bike you know you do ! If you dont buy it now you will regret it for a long time !!

my intention was to point out that it doesnt matter if it is a genuine chassis or modern rep they all can have their problems most chassis's can avoid the dreaded rot if they have been built right as in brazing or tig as long as the join is airtight its rare if they have corrosion on the inside of the tube work if you are in doubt get a pressure vessel tester to measure the thickness of the tube before you buy that will leave you in the best position to buy or walk away
