Unread post by Joen-27 »

Hi all, I was just wondering what cameras the photographers are using as I was at Angelsey Eurocup round watching them wishing i had a camera especailly for the first corner:D lots off chair wheel in air action:D any recommendations as to whats a good camera to use as I go to a lot of road races here in Ireland too, and thats not overly expensive

thanks Joe

Hi Joe

At present I'm using a Canon EOS30D but did start with the Canon EOS300D when I got started.

Go for an entry level D-SLR, OK bit bigger than a point and shoot but in general more flexible. Allows you to add lenses as and when you can afford them and if you get hooked and by a semi-pro D-SLR then the lenses are still usable. Trust me it can become an expensive hobby, I was lucky in that I got laid off at the time I really got into photography and used my redundancy payment to get the kit I have now.

As a Canon user, I'd go for the Canon EOS450D if I was just starting. Get a 70-300mm zoom lens as well as the kit lens.

Another thing, practice. Don't be put off by only liking 1 in 20 shots you take, just keep practicing.

Have a look here http://photography-on-the.net/forum/. It's a good place to ask questions and see what other photographers are using and the results they get.

Canon EOS, pretty much any of them are good for starting out. the 450D for example.

The important bit for racing really is to get the right lens, somewhere 70-200 or 300mm is good for starting out. The bigger the glass the better rather than the longer length. If you have decent glass you only lose a little putting a 1.4 or 1.5 adaptor on it to get the longer telephoto, 2 lenses for the price of one and a bit :D

You don't have to buy a Canon lens, Sigma do some very good lenses for a smaller kind of price but still probably more than you need to pay for the camera body itself.
I use a sigma 70-200 f2.8 , the later version of it can be seen here. It still works with the canon intelligent focus and is a quick to focus lens anyway. (hsm stands for high speed motor)

Then you'll be wanting a monopod, these things get heavy after a while

THEN once you're hooked you'll sell that lot that you just bought on ebay, and get the better stuff later. IF you don't get hooked you haven't spent so much money.
