Camathias Cup Update

The final race of the Camathias Cup was held at the picturesque Belgian circuit of Gedinne. This became the finale of a fantastic 6 round championship held over 4 different European countries. Going into the final race the top 3 positions were not set in stone and so all the teams were ready for an exciting race weekend to decide the first years Camathias Cup winners.

Frank Schoonderberbeek/Marja van den Bor had taken the decision to retire from racing after the Chimay meeting and had already gained enough points to win the upto 750cc class within the Camathias Cup Challenge. With Frank/Marja van not taking part in Gedinne it left the door open for Geert Vansevenant/Eddy Hubrechsen to close the 11 point gap between the two teams to then be crowned the overall Camathias Cup 2013 champions.

Geert/Eddy had won their final race in Gedinne which gave them enough points to then become overall 2013 champions. Saturday evening gave the opportunity for the Camathias Cup Committee to present trophies to the race winners of the day, the overall Camathias Cup 2013 champions and also to thank all the teams for their support during the first successful year of this sidecar challenge.

2014 Camathias Cup Challenge
The committee are already pulling together opportunities for a 6 round series for 2014. On the back of a successful first year several European clubs have approached the committee and expressed an interest in allowing the Camathias Cup challenge being part of their race programme. Its fair to say it is early days yet, but the interest from race clubs and the enthusiasm from the sidecar teams 2014 will be another exciting 6 round European series.

The committee plan to communicate a provisional programme for the 2014 Camathias Cup Challenge by the end of November. There is also ongoing work to pull together a website which will then be used to communicate news on the 2014 plans.
Contact details of the committee will be posted within the next week.

On a Sad Note
On a personal note I must say how sad I was to hear about the passing of Brian Toomes , I had known Brian and his brother Eddy for a number of years and he was a great character around the paddock and someone who you could put the world to rights while enjoying a big helping of whiskey he will be missed.
