Legendary Spa circuit hosts World Championship round three, June 2-5th

From Barry Nutley

The sight of grand prix sidecars streaming through Eau Rouge and away along the Keppel Straight is a sight to stir even the most passive of motorsport fans. That is what to expect the weekend of June 2-5th when the third round of the FIM Sidecar World Championship again joins the FIM Endurance World Championship, this time at the famous 4.352 miles Ardennes circuit of Spa Francorchamps in Belgium.

Four races are already done with fierce battles up front. Young British star Todd Ellis (Santander Salt Yamaha) and French lady passenger Emmanuelle Clement, hold a slender four-point lead over reigning champions Markus Schlosser and Marcel Fries. The Swiss Gustoil Yamaha team have been as strong as last season, earning universal respect for their skill and determination.

With the aftermath of the Coronavirus Lockdown and the ongoing Cost of Living Crisis resulting in many W100 riders obviously withdrawing from or cutting down on their racing activities, our March meeting at Anglesey – without any guest classes – saw our lowest-ever entry of just 65 riders (56 solos & 9 sidecars), and a 40% reduction (approximately £10,000) in our expected entry fees, with no corresponding decrease in our fixed costs.

Two victories for reigning champions, Lee Crawford / Scott Hardie (LCR Suzuki) closed the gap at the top of the standings to a mere four points behind early season pace-setters Pete Founds / Jevan Walmsley (LCR Honda). Founds – who had Jake Lowther deputising for Walmsley – had to settle for a brace of runners-up placings in what were two excellent encounters. Meanwhile, Rob Atkinson / Mark Middleton continued their 100% record in the F2 Cup, scoring maximum points with two victories in class.

Following an eventful season opener at Brands Hatch, the series resumes at Donington Park on the 14th and 15th May, once again with host club N.G.R.R.C..

The weekend will not only see teams fiercely battling for championship points, but the winners of race two will be awarded the “Bill Boddice Trophy”, which reigning champions Lee Crawford / Scott Hardie (LCR Suzuki) will be hoping to defend having taken two dominant wins at this meeting last season. However, they did not have things all their own way at Brands, where Pete Founds / Jevan Walmsley (LCR Honda) took a brace of wins to top the standings by fourteen points.

From Ian.

I pulled over at clearways once after a thump and decrease in power with a ZX10 Engine, after stopping on the Grass I looked back and saw the number 3 conrod on the circuit. At this point I switched off the engine which was still ticking over… Then the Oil on the Exhaust caught fire, and we sprayed it in extinguisher to put it out 🙄

Shelley Smithies needs our help.

From Steve Kershaw. https://gofund.me/ad396167

Hi Folks, Ryan Charlwood has started a gofundme page for our good friend and much loved sidecar passenger Shelley.

Shell suffered very serious injuries in a testing accident at VDV in France and is still currently in hospital in France.

The funds are to help Shelley with the cost of returning to Britain as recovery is going to be a very long process.

Come on Shelley 💪💪🤞🤞you can do it! Love from all team Kershaw #29 xxx

Four-time champions Pete Founds / Jevan Walmsley (LCR Honda) took a fine brace of wins in the opening round of this year’s British F2 Sidecar Championship at Brands Hatch – but were made to work particularly hard in race two as they had an enthralling tussle with reigning title holders Lee Crawford / Scott Hardie (LCR Suzuki). Meanwhile, Rob Atkinson / Mark Middleton (Bellas Yamaha) made a perfect start to their F2 Cup campaign, taking both class wins in dominant fashion.
